What Are OTDRs and What Do They Do?

OTDRs

OTDRs are devices used in fiber cable testing to ensure the cable meets industry operating standards. OTDRs are essential systems for several industries that help maintain safety and equipment integrity. At Legacy Fiberoptics, we have been in business 16 years and our team has over 70 years of combined experience working with customers to help them select the right OTDR for their needs and offering full repair services for those devices.

What Is An OTDR?

An OTDR, or Optical Time Domain Reflectometer, is a device that is used to test and inspect the quality of a fiber cable. OTDRs are used in various cable applications to help inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and certify fiber cables to ensure they are safe to use and integrate into a system. In addition, these devices are also used in the fiber cable inspection process to test components including connection points, bends, and splices to provide a comprehensive analysis of the cable’s performance.

How Does OTDR Fiber Testing Work?

An OTDR device is used to create and analyze a light pulse through one end of a fiber cable. The light travels through the cable in a scattered pattern and is then reflected back and returned to the origin point. Next, the OTDR analyzes the scattered and reflected light pattern data to track any variables or fiber cable problems, such as defects and connector distances. These analytics are determined by the OTDR measuring the amount of time it takes for the light to be returned back to the OTDR.

With OTDRs, there are auto-test function settings and users also have the ability to set their own fiber cable testing inspection measurements. In many cases, manually creating your own cable testing parameters will deliver better, more accurate results. The test can be customized for important cable variables including cable length, the type of cable, and system complexity and the OTDR will then auto-adjust the light pulse factors to ensure the most accurate analytics data is received.

Legacy Fiberoptics OTDR Repair & Certification Services

The team at Legacy Fiberoptics are experts in our industry. We specialize in providing top of the line OTDR systems to customers to meet their specific application needs and continue our support by offering OTDR device repair and certification services. Our technicians are specially trained to diagnose and repair all types of OTDR systems from a variety of different manufacturers.

Common OTDR repairs that are completed by our team include:

  • Replacing a Pigtail
  • Replacing a Display
  • Replacing a Keypad
  • Replacing a Battery

Regardless of the issues you are experiencing with your OTDR, our team has the capability to solve them quickly.

Depending on your company and industry standards, we recommend an annual inspection and calibration for all OTDR devices and optical equipment to uncover any device hardware issues and to certify that the device is continuing to function at maximum capacity. We guarantee our certifications for one year. Once our team completes your optical device repairs and calibrations, we perform rigorous quality testing procedures to verify it meets all operating standards.

OTDRs can be a complex piece of equipment to master if you are unfamiliar with its full capability options. Our technicians have the capability to travel to your facility and provide hands-on, in-person training to provide guidance on fiber optics basics and OTDR device training so you can reduce operation downtime and empower your team to troubleshoot minor issues to improve process efficiency.
